Journalists facing harsh sentences and deportations in the name of "security"

An Israeli court sentenced Anat Kamm, a former soldier, to four and a half years in prison for leaking classified military documents to a newspaper Both international and Israeli journalists and free expression advocates attempting to expose the Israeli military's actions in the Palestinian territories and economic blockade of Gaza have been brutally suppressed in recent weeks under the guise of security, IFEX members report.

Anti-boycott law curbs free expression, say MADA and Human Rights Watch

Calls for boycotting Israel, such as this one, are now punishable offences under a new anti-boycott law passed by the Knesset on 11 July 2011 Israel has violated the right to free expression by approving a law that penalises individuals and organisations that call for boycotting Israel, say IFEX members the Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA) and Human Rights Watch.

Israeli and Palestinian journalists forum calls for press freedom ahead of possible UN recognition of Palestine

In a joint open letter, the forum stated that journalists must be kept safe so that the public in Israel and the Palestinian Territories have access to news from all sides, and to a wide array of political opinion.

Violations of media freedoms in September 2011

The state of media freedom in the Palestinian territories continued to decline in September, with an increase in the number of violations perpetrated against journalists, particularly by the IDF.

Numerous violations were committed against journalists during July 2011, particularly while journalists were covering peaceful weekly marches and activities regularly hosted in several locations across the West Bank.
