IPI TRACKS PRESS-FREEDOM VIOLATIONS

Since the Palestinian uprising (Intifada) in September 2000, Israeli authorities are continuing to commit the vast majority of press-freedom violations in the Israel/Palestine conflict, according to a recent report published by the International Press Institute (IPI).

Of the 310 violations committed between 28 September 2000 and 20 May 2003, Israelis (authorities, settlers and civilians) were responsible for 82.9 per cent of them. Palestinians were responsible for 12.5 per cent, while 4.5 per cent of violations were unaccounted for.

Ten journalists were killed, eight of them Palestinian.

The most worrying aspect of the violations is that Israeli authorities have implicitly condoned attacks on journalists by "effectively promising soldiers immunity," IPI says.
