Anti-boycott law curbs free expression, say MADA and Human Rights Watch

Calls for boycotting Israel, such as this one, are now punishable offences under a new anti-boycott law passed by the Knesset on 11 July 2011 Israel has violated the right to free expression by approving a law that penalises individuals and organisations that call for boycotting Israel, say IFEX members the Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA) and Human Rights Watch.

Hamas shuts down journalist union

Hamas security services descended on the Gaza headquarters of the Palestinian Journalists' Syndicate (PJS) and shut it down indefinitely last week, report the Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA), the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ). It is just the latest in a series of military attacks from all sides on the Palestinian press in the volatile region.

Journalists on raided flotilla speak out; one journalist killed in attack

In the aftermath of Israel's raid on the flotilla delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza on 31 May, journalists released from custody are providing first-hand accounts of abuse, interrogation and confiscation of equipment by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), report the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and Reporters Without Borders (RSF). One journalist was killed in the deadly attack. Meanwhile, Israeli authorities have edited and distributed portions of video footage taken from foreign journalists.

Israeli Defence Forces assault flotilla of activists and journalists, impose media blackout

Israeli forces raided a flotilla of activists on its way to deliver aid to the Gaza Strip; 60 journalists were on board. At least nine people were killed and dozens wounded when an Israeli warship intercepted and raided a flotilla of activists attempting to deliver 10,000 tons of aid to Gaza on 31 May. Around 60 journalists were reportedly on board. More than 600 people from 42 countries, including journalists, activists and artists, have been arrested since the raid unfolded in international waters. Shortly after the assault, Israeli authorities launched an information blackout, blocking cellphones and barring journalists from covering the attack, report the Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA), ARTICLE 19, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and other IFEX members.

JOHNSTON FREED IN GAZA; BUT CAMERAMAN SHOT AND WHISTLEBLOWER SENTENCED

Press freedom organisations celebrated the release of BBC journalist Alan Johnston last week after he spent 114 days held hostage by a criminal gang in Gaza. Also last week, however, Israeli troops in the Palestinian territory shot a cameraman for a Hamas-run television station, resulting in amputation to both legs. And an Israeli court sentenced nuclear whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu, who completed an 18-year sentence in 2004, to another six months in jail for speaking with foreign journalists.

ISRAELI JOURNALIST WINS UNESCO PRESS-FREEDOM PRIZE

Amira Hass, the only Israeli journalist living in the Autonomous Palestinian Territories, has been awarded the 2003 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize. A journalist with the daily Israeli newspaper "Ha'aretz," Hass has spent the past decade reporting from the territories, filing independent and critical reports on the policies of both Israelis and Palestinians.
