Editor of opposition newspaper threatened

Incident details

Threat

Zhyldyz Musabekova, Editor
(CJES/IFEX) - Zhyldyz Musabekova, the deputy editor-in-chief of the opposition newspaper "Forum", has been receiving threats. The journalist said in an interview with the Azattyk radio station on 24 January 2010 that she had received phone calls from unknown individuals who threatened to hurt her 13-year-old daughter. In addition, the journalist says she has been recently followed by a silver Mercedes.

Musabekova is linking the threats to her professional activities. "There is no other possible reason. I am not a businesswoman. I have not had conflicts with anyone and I have no enemies," she said.

Musabekova has worked in journalism for twenty years, and all those years she has worked for pro-opposition publications. However, the first threat against her was made in 2009 when she worked for the "Aiyat-Press" newspaper.
