The decision by Lebanese authorities to annul the passport of Raghida Dergham, the New York bureau chief for the London-based daily "Al-Hayat", coincides with "a disturbing pattern of Lebanese government censorship of foreign newspapers," according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). In a statement published on 4 July, the General Directorate for Internal Security stated that Dergham's passport was voided because of her participation in a panel discussion on the Middle East's political situation on 19 May in Washington, D.C., reports CPJ. The statement from Internal Security said that because the panel included Uri Lubrani, Israel's Coordinator of Activities in Southern Lebanon, Dergham had violated a Lebanese law prohibiting contacts between Lebanese citizens and Israelis. CPJ's sources say, however, that the action may also be linked to Dergham's critical coverage of Lebanon's dispute with the UN over the demarcation of the Lebanese-Israeli border following Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon in May. CPJ said it is "shocked that Lebanese authorities would punish Dergham in response to her thoroughly professional work as a journalist and commentator."
