Malaysia: Journalist Released From Jail

17 June 2003

Malaysian journalist and filmmaker Hishamuddin Rais has been released from prison, reports the Writers in Prison Committee of International PEN (WiPC). One of six activists sentenced under the Internal Security Act on charges of subversion in June 2001, Rais was released on 4 June after completing a two-year term.

The activists were jailed for allegedly attempting to submit a "people's memorandum" to Malaysia's human rights commission calling for press freedom, investigations into official corruption and judicial reform, WiPC says.
