MEXICAN JUDGES, JOURNALISTS ENGAGE IN DIALOGUE
Judges and journalists from Mexico will be engaging in dialogue this week to deepen understanding on press freedom and the law, reports the Inter American Press Association (IAPA).
Organised by IAPA, the "Judicial Conference on Freedom of the Press in Mexico" will take place on 14 January in Mexico City. It will involve the participation of seven Supreme Court judges and judicial officials from Mexico's 31 states, as well as newspaper publishers, editors and reporters.
Panel sessions will examine journalism practices, including access to trials and judicial information. Invited speakers will include well-known journalist Sergio Sarmiento of TV Azteca and political analyst Miguel Angel Granados Chapa. Academics from the Institute of Judicial Research at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) will also be attending.
The Mexico conference is the ninth in a series of conferences IAPA has organised for judges and journalists in Latin America since June 2002.
The conference will also mark the 10th anniversary of the Declaration of Chapultepec, a list of 10 press-freedom principles that has been endorsed by 29 countries across the Americas.
