MEXICO: IAPA CAMPAIGNS AGAINST IMPUNITY

4 October 2005

The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) invites free expression advocates to sign an online letter urging Mexican President Vincente Fox to end the impunity surrounding the July 1997 murder of journalist Benjamín Flores.

Flores was the editor of the newspaper "La Prensa" in San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora state, who was gunned down in front of his office on 15 July. He often reported on the alleged links between drug traffickers and local authorities.

The examining magistrate looking into the case issued arrest warrants for four suspects, but no one has been detained and the murder continues to go unpunished.
