(MISA/IFEX) - On 15 April 2009, MISA-Mozambique denounced the intimidation of two radio journalists in the northern province of Niassa, one of whom was illegally detained by the police. Felismino Jamissone is a producer for a community radio station in the Niassa district of Mecanhelas. He produces a programme on human rights, which has frequently interviewed Mecanhelas citizens who are severely critical of the police.

(MISA/IFEX) - MISA-Mozambican has condemned the physical attacks on journalists that took place on 20 March 2009 in the Port city of Beira. The journalists were attacked by supporters of Renamo, the main opposition party, while covering a political gathering of defectors from Renamo who have since launched a rival opposition party called Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM.) Renamo militants set themselves upon the journalists during an altercation between MDM and Renamo as the new party was symbolically indicating its parting from Renamo by returning the Renamo party flags and other materials at the party's headquarters in the Munhava suburb. No serious injuries were recorded.

(MISA/IFEX) - According to a report in the 17 October 2008 daily issue of "Noticias", two journalists based in Beira, Mozambique's second largest city, were threatened on 15 October by leaders of the opposition political party, Renamo. The two journalists, Moisés Saela and Francisco Raiva, work for Radio Mozambique and Stv, a local independent Mozambican television station, respectively.

(MISA/IFEX) - Three journalists working for "Zambeze" newspaper, an independent publication, charged for allegedly defaming the Prime Minister of Mozambique, Luísa Diogo, and of threatening state security, have been sentenced to 6 months in prison, converted to a monetary fine of 30 Mozambican Meticais (US$1.20). The ruling was made on 29 August 2008.

(MISA/IFEX) - On Monday 21 July 2008, the 3rd Section of the Maputo Judicial Court postponed the trial of three "Zambeze" journalists. "Zambeze" is one of the biggest independent weeklies in Mozambique. The three are accused of threatening state security, after they wrote an article in which they questioned whether the Prime Minister of Mozambique, Luísa Diogo, was Mozambican or Portuguese. The trial has been postponed to 12 August following a request by the Prosecution Authority, which said its representative in that case was not available.

The media workers are still in custody and MISA-Mozambique is attempting to secure their release.

(RSF/IFEX) - Reporters Without Borders welcomed the 30-year jail sentence passed on 20 January 2006 to Anibal Antonio dos Santos Junior ("Anibalzinho"), for leading the commando that gunned down journalist Carlos Cardoso in 2000. But it said many questions remained and called for an investigation of claims by his accomplices that ex-President Joaquim Chissano's son Nyimpine had been involved, and also for an enquiry into Anibalzinho's two escapes from prison since the murder.

(RSF/IFEX) - RSF has called on the Mozambican authorities to protect Jeremias Langa, news director of the privately-owned television station Soico TV (STV). On 27 January 2005, the journalist was kidnapped at gunpoint in Maputo. He was held briefly and threatened with "the same fate as journalist Carlos Cardoso if [he] continued to talk too much." Cardoso was killed in 2000.

(RSF/IFEX) - Carlos Cardoso, Mozambique's most famous journalist, was gunned down on a Maputo street on 22 November 2000. Three years later, the identity of all the persons involved in his death is still unknown, even though six people were convicted in an exemplary trial. At least one of the instigators behind the contract killing is still at large. This is the main conclusion of a report issued by RSF on 21 November 2003.

(MISA/IFEX) - During the weekend of 8 to 9 November 2003, Radio Mozambique journalist Salvador Januario was detained by members and sympathisers of Mozambique's former rebel movement, the Resistencia Nacional Mocambicana (RENAMO). Januario was held captive for several hours at the local RENAMO offices in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.

(MISA/IFEX) - On 15 October 2003, Fernando Manuel, a senior journalist with "Savana" newspaper, was brutally assaulted by a youth. His assailant apparently felt offended by an article written by the journalist and published in the 10 October edition of "Savana". Manuel sustained extensive injuries to his face and head and is currently receiving medical care at Maputo central hospital.

(MISA/IFEX) - On 7 October 2003, TVM (Mozambique Television) journalist Hermínio Nhanombe and Ruben Jossai, of "Savana" newspaper, were threatened and harassed by the bodyguard of Afonso Dlakhama, leader of the opposition Resistencia Nacional Mocambicana (RENAMO). The journalists were covering a political gathering in the Vilankulos district, in southern Mozambique.

(MISA/IFEX) - On 8 October 2003, Anteje Buanar, chairperson of the União Desportiva de Sanjala football club, attacked Luis Dionisio, a sports journalist with the provincial station Radio Mozambique (RM-EP), in the northwestern province of Niassa.
