EIGHT IFEX MEMBERS JOIN INTERNATIONAL MISSION TO NEPAL

Eight IFEX members are visiting Nepal this week as part of an international mission to highlight concerns with authorities over the deteriorating state of free expression in the country and to strengthen links between media and free expression advocates.

ARTICLE 19, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the International Press Institute (IPI), Reporters Without Borders (Reporters sans Frontières, RSF), the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC), the World Association of Newspapers (WAN) and the World Press Freedom Committee (WPFC) are joining representatives of UNESCO and the Danish agency International Media Support (IMS) on the mission, which is visiting the country from 10 to 17 July 2005.

The organisations will meet with government and military officials, journalists and civil society. During their meetings with the government, the delegation will highlight the crucial importance of freedom of expression and media rights as a fundamental component of democratic society and a driver of development and poverty eradication.

The delegation will also visit three rural districts in Nepal to speak with local journalists and regional authorities, and participate in a national conference on freedom of expression and media rights in Kathmandu.
