(CEHURDES/IFEX) - CEHURDES condemns the killing of journalist Pushkar Shrestha in Parsa district.

On 13 January 2008, Shrestha, editor of the local newspaper "Highway Weekly", published in Birgunj, a southern town bordering India, was shot to death by armed individuals suspected to belong to the militant group Janatantrik Terai Mukti Morcha (JTMM-Jwala Singh faction).

Reports said that a person named Toofan Singh, who claimed to be a local leader of the JTMM, which is engaged in an armed revolt in southeastern Nepal, claimed responsibility for the killing.

CEHURDES is shocked by this murder and is concerned at the lack of improvement in security for working journalists in the country.

CEHURDES urges all members of society to voice their grievances through peaceful means and without resorting to senseless violence.
