Journalist assaulted by demonstrators

Dil Bahadur Adhikari, Journalist
(FNJ/IFEX) - On 20 May 2009, Dil Bahadur Adhikari, editor of the Chitwan-based publication "Loktantra Dainik", was assaulted by agitators in Chitwan. Adhikari, who was reporting on a protest rally called by the Nepali Congress to protest the murder of a party member, was harassed by supporters of the strike organisers. The agitators also vandalised Adhikari's motorcycle.

The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) condemns this act and urges the government to bring the culprits to justice. FNJ has also demanded appropriate compensation for the victim.

FNJ stressed that persons should not be targeted in the name of "bandhas" and strikes called by various political parties.
