(PROBIDAD/IFEX) - Journalist Jorge Loáisiga, who works for "La Prensa" newspaper was mistreated by presidential security guards on the night of 19 December 2007. The incident occurred at a public ceremony in Managua, the capital, attended by the president and several ambassadors. Loáisiga was trying to obtain comments from the United States ambassador when he was very roughly detained by the guards, who turned him over to the police. The journalist was handcuffed and being led away as a detainee, but the authorities stopped when other journalists and local residents protested.

(FIP/IFEX) - The IFJ Regional Office for Latin America condemns and laments the murder of journalist Rony Adolfo Olivas Olivas, which which ocurred in the early hours of 14 August 2005 in the city of Estelí, 150 km north of Managua. Olivas was a correspondent for "La Prensa" newspaper, a reporter for Liberación radio and president of the Estelí branch of the Nicaraguan Journalists' Union (Unión de Periodistas de Nicaragua, UPN).

(PROBIDAD/IFEX) - At 6:00 a.m. (local time) on 26 January 2005, Eugenio Hernández González was declared guilty of having assassinated María José Bravo, a correspondent for "La Prensa" newspaper. Judge Rosa Inés Osorio, of the Juigalpa Criminal Court, ruled on the case after a trial that lasted more than eight hours.

The journalist was shot as she was covering clashes near a vote-counting centre in Juigalpa, Chontales department, 140 km south of Managua, two days after municipal elections were held throughout Nicaragua.

(PROBIDAD/IFEX) - On 20 August 2004, Judge Carlos Mario Peña, of the Managua Fifth District Criminal Court, issued a veiled threat against journalist Mirna Velásquez, of "La Prensa" newspaper. According to information provided by the journalist and published in "La Prensa", after a press conference the judge approached Velásquez and tried to intimidate her by recounting detailed information about her private life, how she spent her free time and the places she frequented. He warned Velásquez "to be careful", saying she would continue to be followed.

(PFC/IFEX) - Judge Juana Méndez has issued an order prohibiting journalist Eloísa Ibarra, of the "El Nuevo Diario" newspaper, from entering the Dirección de Auxilio Judicial (DAJ) police prison. Former president Arnoldo Alemán is currently being detained at the DAJ premises on corruption charges. On 22 October 2003, Judge Méndez visited the prison to return to Alemán a mobile phone that had been confiscated by prison authorities the previous day. Although other journalists were allowed to report on the event, the "El Nuevo Diario" news team was told by a security official that Judge Méndez had issued an order barring Ibarra from the premises.
