(MFWA/IFEX) - On 6 April 2009, Ali Soumana, publisher of the independent Niamey-based weekly "Le Courrier", was arrested and detained at the headquarters of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) following a defamation complaint brought against him by Seyni Salou, managing director of the state-owned water company, Eau du Niger (SPEN).

"L'Action" editor remanded in custody following complaint brought by finance minister

(MFWA/IFEX) - Boussada Ben Ali, managing editor of "L'Action", an independent Niamey-based newspaper, was arrested on 23 January 2009 and held at the Criminal Investigation Department of the police following a complaint lodged against him by the minister of finance and economic planning, Mahamane Ali Lamine Zein. Ben Ali was remanded in prison custody by the Niamey Tribunal on 26 January and is to reappear in court for judgment on 27 January.

(RSF/IFEX) - Reporters Without Borders condemns the arrests of Moussa Aksar, the editor-in-chief of the privately-owned weekly "L'Evénement", and one of his journalists, Sani Aboubacar, on 12 November 2008 on a charge of libelling the head of the state power company. Their arrests came a day after another newspaper editor got a three-month suspended sentence after 12 days in pre-trial custody.

(RSF/IFEX) - Reporters Without Borders condemns the 19 August 2008 decision by the Higher Council for Communication (CSC), Niger's media regulatory body, ordering the Niamey-based radio and TV broadcaster Dounia to suspend operations for one month. No explanation was given and Dounia was given no chance to defend itself.

(RSF/IFEX) - Reporters Without Borders is dismayed by the obstinacy with which Niger's authorities are keeping journalist Moussa Kaka in prison, despite a judge's decision to dismiss the case against him. On 19 August 2008, at the request of the prosecutor's office, a Niamey appeal court overturned a ruling issued by an investigating judge in June for Kaka's provisional release.

(RSF/IFEX) - Reporters Without Borders strongly condemns the 28 July 2008 decision by Niger's public prosecutor to appeal against an investigating judge's decision on 23 July to dismiss the charges on which Radio Saraounia manager Moussa Kaka has been held since September 2007. The authorities would have had to free Kaka if the prosecutor had not filed his appeal.

(MFWA/IFEX) - On 16 February 2008, Raliou Ahmed Assaleh, director of Radio Sahara, an independent radio station based in Agadez, a northern town 1000km from Niamey, and two other journalists, Moussa Inne and Ben Issoufou Mohammed were subjected to hours of interrogation by the Agadez Gendarmerie over a story the station had aired two days earlier.
