NIGERIA: CPJ welcomes the release of U.S. documentary film crew
New York, April 17, 2008 - In response to news reports that four American documentary filmmakers and a Nigerian national were released yesterday evening after spending five days in state security custody in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, the Committee to Protect Journalists released the following statement:
"We are relieved that our colleagues were released," CPJ Africa Program Coordinator Tom Rhodes said. "They were held for no reason; the filmmakers entered the country legally on April 5. We call on Nigerian authorities to allow journalists to carry out their work in the volatile oil-producing Niger Delta region without harassment so they can report on this important political story."
