Newsletter Covers Free Expression Issues in Rural Pakistan
7 February 2006
The Rural Media Network of Pakistan has launched a new publication dedicated to providing rural-based journalists with news and information about freedom of expression issues. Supported by UNESCO and the newspaper "Nawa-i-Ahmedpur Sharqia", the newsletter is called "Sadiq News" and is published in Urdu. Its first issue was printed in January 2006.
The newsletter includes information on media ethics and training, and is seen as a tool to help rural journalists learn about their rights and to network with colleagues. It also collects information on press freedom violations in remote areas of the country via the Rural Media Network, the National Press Union, and reporters from "Nawa-i-Ahmedpur Sharqia".
Ehsan Ahmed Sehar, editor-in-chief of "Nawa-i-Ahmedur Sharqia", says the newsletter was created to fill a gap in Pakistan's rural areas. "Press freedom has largely thrived in bigger cities, but these improvements have not generally filtered down to the provinces."
For more information, contact Ehsan Ahmed Sehar: ehsan.sehar@gmail.com or ehsanshr@hotmail.com. Sadiq News can be contacted by mail at: Rural Media Network, Press Chambers, Opposite Canal Rest House, Katchery Road, AhmedpurEast, District Bahalwalpur, Pakistan.
The Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) also publishes an Urdu-language newsletter, the "Weekly Pakistan Media Review", which reports on media developments in the country (see:
