Alert

Two television journalists missing since March 2006

Incident details

Mukesh Rupeta, Sunjey Kumar

(PPF/IFEX) - Mukesh Rupeta, a correspondent for Pakistan's leading television channel Geo News, and cameraman Sunjey Kumar, have been missing since 6 March 2006 from the city of Jacobabad in Sindh province.

According to a spokesperson for Geo News, the only information they have from the authorities is that Rupeta has been detained and is being interrogated for filming at the Jacobabad Air Force Base. Officials said Rupeta would be handed over to the police on conclusion of the investigation. So far no charge has been filed against Rupeta or Kumar.

According to the Geo News spokesperson, the organisation had been unable to contact Rupeta, which is a cause of anxiety for his colleagues and family.

Journalists in Jacobabad staged protests at a local press club and urged the government to ensure the release of their colleagues immediately.
