A reporter for Pakistan's largest private TV news channel was gunned down last week, shortly after covering gang violence in Karachi, report the Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) and other IFEX members.

On 13 January, Wali Khan Babar, 29, reporter for Geo News, was ambushed while driving home from work by two unidentified men on motorcycle who deliberately shot him in the head five times.

The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) observed a countrywide "black day" of mourning on 14 January, staging protest rallies and hoisting black flags at journalists' unions and press clubs.

Last year, Pakistan was considered the most dangerous country for journalists, with at least eight killed in direct connection to their work, says the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). CPJ appealed to President Asif Ali Zardari, on a recent visit to Washington, D.C., to address growing anti-press attacks in his country.
