Italian journalist kidnapped and killed in Gaza

Vittorio Arrigoni (left) Hamas officials have found the body of an Italian journalist and activist who was kidnapped last week in Gaza, report the Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA) and the International Press Institute (IPI). Vittorio Arrigoni was affiliated with the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), a pro-Palestinian rights group, and reported on Palestinian issues for the Italian newspaper "Il Manifesto" and online paper Peacereporter, and also wrote a blog.

Hamas shuts down journalist union

Hamas security services descended on the Gaza headquarters of the Palestinian Journalists' Syndicate (PJS) and shut it down indefinitely last week, report the Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA), the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ). It is just the latest in a series of military attacks from all sides on the Palestinian press in the volatile region.

Newspapers trapped in political quagmire; sound bombs hurled at journalists

Three pro-Fatah Palestinian newspapers published in the West Bank have been barred from distribution in the Gaza Strip, and told not to criticise the Hamas government in order to be permitted into the country, report the Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA), the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and Index on Censorship. MADA has also condemned the use of tear gas and sound bombs by Israeli forces on Palestinian journalists covering protests last week.

Violations by Israeli forces against journalists in the occupied Palestinian territories (oPt) rose in number in the month of December, with journalists being frequently targeted with tear gas grenades.

November has seen no improvement for Palestinian journalists or media freedoms in the occupied Palestinian territories, reminding those in the field of journalism of the high price paid for disseminating the truth.
