PALESTINIAN WINS CRNI'S COURAGE IN EDITORIAL CARTOONING AWARD

Bahaa Boukhari, a Palestinian cartoonist who has faced jail terms for his work, has won the 2008 Courage in Editorial Cartooning Award from IFEX member Cartoonists Rights Network International (CRNI).

This February, authorities in Gaza suspended publication of "Al Ayaam", a pro-Fatah newspaper, for publishing one of Boukhari's cartoons that allegedly insulted Hamas. Even though Boukhari and two senior employees at the paper had their fines and prison sentences suspended, CRNI said an unprecedented series of demonstrations took place in Ramallah in defence of Boukhari and for Palestinians' right to express themselves.

The Courage in Editorial Cartooning Award recognises cartoonists who show exemplary courage in the face of unrelenting threat, legal action or other pressure because of their work. CRNI presented the award to Boukhari on 26 June at its annual dinner in San Antonio, Texas.
