(IPYS/IFEX) - On 2 August 2007, journalist Manuel Velásquez Montero, director of Radio Ferreñafe's programme "La Voz Regional", accused Mayor William Cabrejos Requejo of approaching the station's facilities and demanding his right to respond by banging on the door and threatening him. Ferreñafe is located in the region of Lambayeque, northwestern Peru.

Faced with the mayor's belligerent behaviour, the journalist refused to let him into the radio station, which made him even more indignant. The mayor then challenged the journalist to a fight. The journalist had to phone the police.

When interviewed by IPYS, the mayor stated that the journalist continually defames him, and that that was why he decided to confront him.
