Reporters assaulted while filming authorities' examination and removal of murder victim's body

(IPYS/IFEX) - On 15 November 2007, camera operator Ernesto Delgado Vargas and reporter Helena Ortiz Terán, of TV Mundo Canal 53 television station, were assaulted by the relatives of a murdered woman. The incident took place in the district of Paucaparta, Arequipa region, when they were covering procedures carried out by the prosecutor and the police at the preliminary inspection and removal of the body from the site where it was found.

A group of 10 of the victim's relatives approached the journalists and started hitting them while demanding that they leave the place.

Delgado Vargas was pummeled in the face and head and his video camera was damaged.

The reporters taped the assault. They handed over the videotape to the police when they reported the incident. They also asked for measures to be taken to protect them.
