(RSF/IFEX) - RSF has voiced its satisfaction at the arrest of Clarito Arizobal, chief suspect in the 11 February 2004 murder of radio commentator Rowell Endrinal.

Arizobal was arrested on 26 May 2005 in Legaspi, south east of Manila, after a three-week police surveillance. The 38-year-old hit man is also suspected of involvement in other murders and burglaries.

RSF also noted efforts undertaken by the Philippines authorities to speed up investigations into the murders of journalists.

"The culture of impunity can only be defeated by the arrest of killers and instigators of murders and not just through them being identified," RSF said.

Philippines police boasted at a 24 May senate hearing that they had solved most of the murders, but without necessarily having put the killers behind bars.
