FAIFE/IFLA TO EXAMINE CENSORSHIP IN RUSSIA

Censorship in Russia, and the role of libraries and journalists in promoting access to information, will be the subjects of a conference in March 2005 sponsored by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA).

Held from 16 to 18 March, the conference will examine the "historical and contemporary control and access of information, the social responsibility of participants in the "informational" process, and the role of libraries and mass media journalists in an "informational society."

Topics to be discussed include the World Summit on the Information Society, Internet censorship and the role of government in ensuring access to information. IFLA's Committee on Freedom of Access to Information and Freedom of Expression (FAIFE) is sponsoring the conference in cooperation with the National Library of Russia and the Russian Academy of Sciences.
