Blogger faces charges of blasphemy, apostasy after Mohammed tweets

Saudi blogger Hamza Kashgari may face the death penalty for tweets he sent out about the Prophet Mohammed A Saudi blogger whose tweets about the Prophet Mohammed were deemed blasphemous and tantamount to apostasy has been deported from Malaysia back to Saudi Arabia, where he is certain to face trial and possibly the death penalty, report Malaysia's Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ), the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI), Human Rights Watch and other IFEX members.

Saudi Arabia continues to live up to its position as one of the world's worst countries to be a blogger by passing a draconian "electronic publication" regulation that further restricts free expression online, report the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI), Human Rights Watch and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).

Regimes worldwide attempt to control information on BlackBerry devices

Governments worldwide are squeezing BlackBerry for access to citizen's emails. The decision by the United Arab Emirates to suspend BlackBerry services for email, instant messaging and browsing the web as of 11 October was only the beginning. Several countries, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Indonesia and India, are also considering similar bans and demanding access to BlackBerry's encryption technology in an effort to control the flow of information, report the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and Freedom House. UAE authorities say BlackBerry phones are a threat to national security if they can't be monitored.

TRAVEL BANS IMPOSED ON GOVERNMENT CRITICS

Saudi Arabia has barred prominent government critics from foreign travel without regard to Saudi or international law, Human Rights Watch said in a letter to King Abdullah on 9 February 2007. Underlying these bans appears to be a desire to punish government critics and to prevent their views from reaching a foreign audience.

Saudi Arabia has lifted a ban on two gay websites in response to pressure from Reporters Without Borders (Reporters sans frontières, RSF). Access to the websites gaymiddleast.com and 365gay.com within the country had been blocked since early March 2004 after authorities deemed them "pornographic."
