(MFWA/IFEX) - An Appeal court in Dakar on 2 December 2008 rejected the bail application filed by lawyers of El Malick Seck, jailed editor-in-chief of the privately-owned "24 Heures Chrono" newspaper.

Seck's lawyers appealed immediately after he was handed a three-year prison sentence on 12 September, for "public insult" and publishing "false news". His newspaper was also suspended for three months on the same offences.

He was charged with four violations, including "insulting the head of state", and "possessing illegal documents". The court however, exonerated the journalist of these two offences.

Seck was arrested and detained on 28 August for publishing an article that linked President Abdoulaye Wade and his son to a case of money laundering involving Côte d'Ivoire.
