(MFWA/IFEX) - Pape Samba Sène, a correspondent for the privately-owned "L'As" newspaper in Kaffrine in the central region of Senegal, and Abdou Dia, a journalist working for Radio Futur Média (RFM), were interrogated on 9 July 2009 by the Kaffrine Gendarmerie over allegations of "defamation" and "disseminating false news".

Media Foundation for West Africa's (MFWA) correspondent reported that the interrogations followed a complaint filed by the governor of the region, Fabakary Bodian, and another top official, Maguette Diallo.

In an article, Pape Sène accused Bodian, Diallo and another official of being involved in the disappearance of 16 tonnes of seeds. Dia also broadcast the information on RFM on 2 July.

During the interrogation, the two journalists refused to disclose the source of their information.
