(MFWA/IFEX) - A regional tribunal in Kaolack, a town in the western-central region of Senegal on September 30, 2009 released on bail Papa Samba Sene and Abou Dia, journalists of privately-owned "L'As" newspaper and radio station Radio Futurs Médias (RFM) respectively.

The two journalists who are facing counts of "defamation", "disseminating false information" and "criminal conspiracy" were arrested on September 18, following a complaint brought against them by the governor of the newly created region of Kaffrine.

Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA)'s correspondent reported that the arrest and subsequent detention of the two journalists were in connection with stories the two journalists filed accusing the Kaffrine regional authorities of diverting seeds meant for distribution to local farmers.
