(MFWA/IFEX) - On 2 October 2010, a group of journalists were manhandled by six police officers drawn from Pikine, a city located east of Dakar, the capital of Senegal, for covering an "illegal" demonstration.

The camera of Najib Sagne of Walf TV and a dictaphone belonging to Moussa Thiam of Sud FM were confiscated by the police officers when they resisted arrest.

The Media Foundation for West Africa's (MFWA) correspondent in Senegal reported that Sagne's camera was returned to him upon the intervention of a senior police officer. However, Thiam's dictaphone has not been returned to him.

The journalists had gone to the area to cover a demonstration by some angry residents, who were up in arms over compensation that the authorities were proposing to give them in order to relocate them to make way for the construction of a toll road.
