Alert
RSF asks NATO to launch inquiry into journalists' murder
Incident details
other
(RSF/IFEX) - RSF is deeply alarmed by the murder of two German journalists
in Kosovo.
**Updates IFEX alerts of 15 June and 14 June 1999**
On 13 June, Gabriel Gruener and Volker Kraemer, a journalist and
photographer, respectively, of the German weekly "Stern", were shot and
killed close to the city of Stimlje (40 km south of Pristina). Senol Alit,
their Macedonian translator, was also killed. According to certain sources,
the two journalists were allegedly led by two unknown individuals to the
supposed location of a fictional village outside the city of Prizren, before
being murdered there. Other sources have stated that the journalists were
killed by snipers on the road from Prizren to Skopje (in Macedonia).
Recommended Action
Send appeals to NATO's secretary general:
asking him to launch an inquiry into these murders
asking to be kept informed of developments with the case
urging him to do everything in his power to ensure that military leaders
on the ground provide for the protection of journalists
noting that a great number of journalists are currently covering the
deployment of NATO troops, while the situation remains dangerous in the
province: snipers, paramilitary personnel, mines all present hazards to
journalists
reminding him that the wars in the former Yugoslavia have been among the
bloodiest for the journalistic community
noting that between 1991 and 1995, at least forty-five reporters died
while carrying out their professional duties
