DATE SET FOR AFRICAN EDITORS' CONFERENCE

The South African National Editor's Forum (SANEF) has fixed new dates for an All Africa Editors' Conference in Johannesburg, bringing together dozens of editors from print and electronic media to discuss the strengthening of press freedom in Africa.

Originally planned for 21-22 February, the conference will be held 11-13 April and feature South African president Thabo Mbeki as the keynote speaker. The theme of the conference is "Media, the African Union, NEPAD and Democracy."

SANEF says it hopes the meeting will declare press freedom as indispensable to the success of the African Union and the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) initiative and begin a process of building institutional capacity for promoting press freedom throughout Africa. SANEF, the Institute for Global Dialogue and the NSJ Training Trust are the conference organisers.
