Report Surveys Media in War-Torn Sri Lanka
29 July 2003
The Centre for Policy Alternatives and International Media Support have published the first comprehensive survey in over 20 years of the media in Sri Lank's war-ravaged north-east region, providing important baseline data and recommendations for intervention.
The report's authors say the media plays an essential role in Sri Lanka's move toward peace. "An examination [of] how it can best aid conflict transformation and help support ... the emergence of a post-conflict situation is of pivotal importance."
The report's recommendations include safety training for journalists, creation of professional journalistic standards, improving capacity for computers and telecommunications equipment, and improving relations between Tamil and Muslim media.
