NEPAL/SRI LANKA: JOURNALISTS SHARE CONFLICT-REPORTING STORIES

Journalists and press-freedom advocates from Nepal and Sri Lanka, including Free Media Movement (FMM), took part in a recent project to exchange experiences on conflict reporting, writes the Center for Policy Alternatives (CPA).

In October 2003, CPA and Panos South Asia organised a four-day series of events in Nepal to address the question of how media should report in environments plagued by prolonged conflict and unstable ceasefire agreements.

The seminars enabled Sri Lankan journalists and their Nepalese counterparts to draw parallels and spark discussion around this issue. Participants included FMM, the Federation of Nepalese Journalists and CPA.

Several forums also enabled Nepalese journalists and human rights activists to share their experiences with the Sri Lankan visitors

The Sri Lanka-based FMM and Nepal's Center for Human Rights and Democratic Studies regularly report on free-expression violations in their respective countries.
