IMS INITIATES SUPPORT FOR INDEPENDENT MEDIA
International Media Support (IMS), a Danish organisation that provides rapid assistance to journalist groups in conflict areas, has recently issued a report recommending several initiatives to support freedom of expression in Sudan. Coming on the heels of a 2-11 June mission to the country, the report notes four areas where IMS will undertake initiatives.
It will offer support to promote reporting from conflict-ridden regions in Sudan; establish a newspaper association with support from the World Association of Newspapers; strengthen local capacity to monitor and report on press freedom conditions; and foster regional networks linking local independent media with groups in the Horn of Africa.
In particular, IMS plans to support the Media Foundation for West Africa and the East African Media Institute in their efforts to set up regional links with independent Sudanese journalists.
