(RSF/IFEX) - RSF has learned that Qaiss Darwish was released on 29 August
1999 from Seydnaya prison, under the amnesty decreed by President El-Assad,
issued on 12 July for his fifth term as president of the Syrian Republic. A
journalist for the periodical "Al-Ka'ayda", Darwish had been jailed since
his arrest in August 1984, charged of belonging to the Communist Action
Party and sentenced to fifteen years in prison.
