(RSF/IFEX) - Reporters Without Borders deplores the UN's refusal to issue accreditation to the Taiwanese media for the 63rd session of General Assembly that opened in New York on 16 September 2008. The press freedom organisation recently wrote to Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon asking him to help find a way for Taiwan's journalists to be able to cover the General Assembly.

(RSF/IFEX) - Reporters Without Borders is exasperated by the UN's inability to resolve the problem of Taiwanese journalists who want to cover the annual World Health Assembly in Geneva. Their requests for accreditation were refused again this year on the sole grounds that they are Taiwanese.

(RSF/IFEX) - A motorist drove into a group of journalists outside the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial in Taipei on 6 December 2007, knocking down EETV News cameraman Wang Rei-Zhang and slightly injuring two others. Wang was hospitalised in a critical condition. Hundreds of demonstrators, journalists and policemen had gathered outside the building, whose name is being changed to the Democracy Memorial.

(RSF/IFEX) - Reporters Without Borders voiced exasperation at the failure of the UN to resolve a dilemma under which Taiwanese journalists have again been refused accreditation to cover the World Health Assembly in Geneva simply because they are from Taiwan.

(RSF/IFEX) - Reporters Without Borders has condemned a Taipei court's decision on 24 April 2006 ordering "United Daily News" reporter Kao Nien-yi to pay a fine of 30,000 Taiwanese dollars (770 euros) every day until he revealed his sources for a report about a financial scandal. The order was enforced three days running before being suspended on 27 April.

(RSF/IFEX) - RSF has voiced dismay over the abrupt closure of television news station ETTV-S. The station was closed along with six others - mainly entertainment, commercial cable television stations - following a 31 July 2005 decision by the government's Satellite Broadcasting Business Review Committee not to renew their licences. They were given just two days to stop broadcasting.

(RSF/IFEX) - RSF has challenged a United Nations (UN) decision to refuse accreditation to Taiwanese journalists to cover the World Health Organisation (WHO) conference being held in Geneva from 16-25 May 2005. The UN has justified its decision by pointing out that Taiwan is not a member state recognised by the UN General Assembly.

(RSF/IFEX) - RSF has challenged the Taiwanese authorities' decision to ban two major Chinese media outlets from operating on the island. On 10 April 2005, Taiwan slapped a ban on the Xinhua news agency and "People's Daily" newspaper.

(RSF/IFEX) - On the evening of 10 April 2004, a crowd of anti-government demonstrators injured 14 journalists outside the presidential palace in Taipei. During the demonstration, protesters gradually became increasingly hostile towards television crews and press photographers who were present, and several journalists were assaulted.
