Journalist Meirkhaim Gavrielov killed

(GDF/IFEX) - On 8 June 1998, around 9 pm local time, unknown individuals
burst into the home of journalist Meirkhaim Gavrielov, beating and then
strangling him with an iron wire.

Gavrielov, 70, was a noted journalist who had worked for the Tajik media for
more than fifty years. At the time of his murder, Gavrielov was
editor-in-chief of the Tajik Agrarian University newspaper "Donish", a
position he held since 1979. He was also the author of several books and a
member of the Bukharian (Central Asian) Jewish Section of the Writers Union
of Tajikistan.

According to GDF, more than sixty journalists have been killed in Tajikistan
since 1992.

Recommended Action

Send appeals to authorities:
  • expressing deep concern over the murder of Meirkhaim Gavrielov
  • calling on them to initiate a thorough and impartial investigation into
    death so that the reasons for it are made known and so that those
    responsible are tried and punished
  • urging that they make public all developments in the investigation
