(RSF/IFEX) - On 22 April 2005, journalist Hamadi Jebali was transferred to Mahdia prison. Three days later, he ended his hunger strike.

"We learned of Hamadi Jebali's transfer and the improvement of his prison conditions. However, despite these positive developments, the only satisfactory conclusion to this case would be the journalist's unconditional release, as we've called for previously," RSF said.

When reached by RSF, Jebali's wife said that when she last visited Sfax prison on 23 April, the guards informed her of her husband's transfer to Mahdia the previous evening. She told the organisation that she felt reassured by this development. Jebali ended his hunger strike on 25 April and is no longer being kept in solitary confinement.

Mahdia is located 60 km from Sousse, where the journalist's family resides.
