(RSF/IFEX) - In a 10 November 2005 letter from the executive secretariat of the World Summit for the Information Society (WSIS), RSF Secretary General Robert Ménard was informed that Tunisian authorities would not allow him in the country to attend the summit.

In the letter, WSIS Executive Director Charles Geiger wrote, "It is my duty to inform you that on 9 November 2005, Tunisia's Permanent Mission issued the following statement to the ITU [International Telecommunication Union]: 'The judicial investigation into case no. 7062269/2002 against Mr. Robert Ménard, dated 9 July 2002, is currently before the Public Prosecutor. As a result, Mr. Robert Ménard cannot legally enter Tunisia until such time as he has been summoned by the judicial body in charge of the case.' As executive director of WSIS, I feel it is my duty to bring this information to your attention."

Tunisia is hosting Phase II of WSIS from 16-18 November 2005.
