(IFJ/IFEX) - In a 28 November 2000 letter to Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma, the IFJ expressed its deep concern about the recent discovery of a decapitated corpse and skull which could be the remains of journalist Georgy Gongadze.
According to the IFJ's information, the gruesome remains were found in early November in the Taraschanskyi region, close to Kiev. Gongadze, founder and editor-in-chief of the Internet site
www.pravda.com.ua, an online newspaper that is very critical of the authorities, disappeared on 16 September 2000, as his wife and two daughters were waiting for him at home. In the weeks prior to his disappearance, he was interrogated on several occasions by police in the context of a criminal investigation. He published articles on his website which denounced the corruption of certain high-level Ukrainian officials.
Gongadze's Internet site said in one of its reports that police had asked his colleagues to describe a bracelet and a signet ring belonging to him. "These items were so individual that we were left without doubt that they had belonged to Georgy," the report said.
Pravda.com.ua said its reporters had also asked forensic experts to x-ray one of the corpse's arms, found to contain metal fragments. It said Gongadze had been injured in the arm while reporting from Abkhazia, a breakaway region of former Soviet Georgia.
Hundreds of people staged a protest outside parliament following Gongadze's disappearance, calling on the authorities to find the missing journalist.
