U.S. Lawmakers Form Press Freedom Caucus

6 June 2006

A group of U.S. senators and house representatives have formed a bipartisan caucus to monitor press freedom violations around the world and to lobby in defence of persecuted journalists.

Co-chaired by Senators Chris Dodd and Richard Lugar, and Representatives Adam Schiff and Mike Pence, the Congressional Caucus for the Freedom of the Press serves as a mechanism for drawing greater attention to attacks on journalists and media censorship.

The Caucus will do so by convening experts to discuss press freedom in "hot spot" countries and to raise awareness of these situations among members of congress and the general public.

It will also compile reports on cases of persecuted journalists, initiate letters and petitions to support jailed journalists and to lobby against impunity, and recommend government policies that can better protect press freedom.
