(IPYS/IFEX) - On 25 January 2010, Wilfredo Hernández, a photographer for the newspaper "El Carabobeño", was hit with a pipe, fracturing his nose. The journalist had to be treated surgically. The incident took place in Valencia, central Venezuela.

Hernández was covering a students' demonstration against the government's order to TV station RCTV Internacional to stop broadcasting when a student demanded that Hernández identify himself. The reporter said that he was a member of the press and showed his press vest and his professional camera. When the photographer turned his back, the demonstrator hit him in the face with a pipe.

Hernández was taken by "El Carabobeño" personnel to a medical center for surgical treatment.
