PROMINENT JOURNALIST ASSASSINATED

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) is calling for a thorough and detailed investigation into the murder of a Yemeni journalist who has been described as a prominent press freedom advocate.

On 6 December 2004, the body of Mohammed Salem Al-Sagheer was found in the Yemeni capital of Sana'a. His wife was also killed. Police say the two were shot in the head by a professional assassin who used a gun with a silencer. A motive has not yet been confirmed.

Al-Sagheer was the editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Al-Waseet" and a businessman. He had supported private sector and opposition newspapers by providing printing facilities at affordable prices, says IFJ. The Yemen Syndicate of Journalists, an IFJ affiliate, is following the police investigation closely.
