GOVERNMENT CLAMPS DOWN ON INDEPENDENT PRESS

The government of Yemen has been clamping down on independent and opposition journalists, reports the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). On 17 May, CPJ wrote to President Ali Abdullah Saleh, to protest the prosecution of six newspapers for publishing criticism of the authorities. Since February, CPJ says, the "authorities have taken a series of other punitive measures against journalists, including the arrest of editors and reporters, the suspension and censorship of publications, and extra-legal harassment of journalists by security forces and presumed state agents." CPJ executive director Ann Cooper says, "This recent spate of attacks on the press in Yemen has created a formidable climate of intimidation for all journalists. We call on President Saleh to take the lead in reversing this sharp deterioration in press freedom." At least three journalists were arrested this year, a leading London-based newspaper was banned, and an editor was severely beaten by unknown assailants.
