(MISA/IFEX) - The chairperson of Zimbabwe's Media and Information Commission (MIC), Tafataona Mahoso, says "The Daily News" will stay closed indefinitely, even if the newspaper registers with his commission.

Mahoso told the state-owned "Sunday Mail" newspaper that the registration process involved evaluating the information submitted and this could take some time. No time frame was given as to how long this might take.

"Arriving at the doorsteps [of the MIC] does not mean that they will be registered. It was them who went to the court to report their crime and not us," said Mahoso.
Gugulethu Moyo, legal advisor for "The Daily News", told MISA-Zimbabwe that she has submitted the newspaper's registration forms with the MIC.
Media organisations in Zimbabwe and around the world have condemned the closure of "The Daily News" as a blow against press freedom and freedom of expression.
