Police reportedly want to charge Flata Kavinga, a journalist with the Kwekwe-based "Midlands Observer", with practicing journalism without accreditation.
(MISA/IFEX) – Flata Kavinga, a journalist with the Kwekwe-based “Midlands Observer”, was arrested and detained on 10 October 2010 around 1100 hrs while covering a demonstration by St Bernard Roman Catholic Church members against the parish’s priest.
It is alleged that Kavinga was asked by the police to stop taking pictures of the demonstration, but continued to do so, leading to his arrest and the confiscation of his camera.
His lawyer Valentine Mutatu confirmed Kavinga’s arrest and detention, saying that the police were contemplating charging him with practicing journalism without accreditation under the repressive Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA).
