APPLY NOW FOR TWO PRESS FREEDOM FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMMES

The deadline for two fellowship programmes that highlight press freedom - the International Knight and the Jack R. Howard fellowships - is fast approaching.

The Knight Foundation invites experienced journalists from around the world to apply for the International Knight Fellowships Program. This year, the foundation is paying special attention to applicants from countries where the news media can work as a significant agent of change, both in nurturing a free press and fostering innovation. The deadline is 15 December.

Applicants must have at least five years of full-time professional experience and must be currently working full-time as journalists.

The eight lucky fellows receive a stipend of US$60,000 plus tuition at Stanford University in California. One fellowship is reserved for journalists from Latin America, while another fellowship, funded by Yahoo!, is set aside for a journalist from a country where there are restrictions on press freedom.

Meanwhile, journalists from developing or transitional countries are invited to apply for the Jack R. Howard Fellowship Program to study at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism in New York. The deadline is 15 December.

Two fellows will be selected on the basis of financial need, academic promise and a desire to make a significant contribution to journalism and press freedom in their countries. Candidates must apply online at: https://app.applyyourself.com/?id=col-jour to the journalism school to be considered for the fellowship.

The fellowship honours the memory of Jack R. Howard, past president of the Scripps Howard Foundation, which funds the programme.
