We're looking for a talented individual for the position of Communications Director in the IFEX Secretariat office in Toronto, Canada.

We are: A dynamic and diverse network of over 115 non-governmental organisations worldwide that defend and promote the right to freedom of expression and information.

We are seeking: A creative, skilled and innovative person to join our Strategy team and develop and guide a communications strategy that will take IFEX to the next level in terms of its global influence and impact.

The Big Picture: IFEX's vision is one where everyone is free to exercise their right to freedom of expression and information without fear, and is able to access, generate and share ideas and information any way they choose. The Communications Director will work to expand the conversation around freedom of expression as a fundamental human right, strengthen and enhance the visibility of the advocacy and awareness-raising work of IFEX and its member network, and in turn attract supporters, donors and partners for the organisation.

The job: You will be responsible for developing and guiding the strategy for all IFEX communications, social media and public relations messages and collateral. Your priorities will be to:
• Innovate in the development, implementation, testing and evaluation of an integrated, proactive communications strategy and annual
workplan to advance and amplify the profile, influence, and impact of IFEX and its member network;
• Cultivate, steward and grow relationships internally and externally, including collaboration with the IFEX Strategy team, other staff, members,
stakeholders, influencers and the media;
• Lead, build and manage the communications team to successfully execute the communications strategy, including leading work planning
processes, offering ongoing support and conducting annual performance reviews, where relevant
• Oversee the development, production and delivery of all print and digital communications assets and the maintenance of all communication
channels, including but not limited to IFEX's website, social media, e-mail delivery systems;
• Participate in the Strategy team, providing valued input on critical problems, including advising the Executive Director and Strategy team on
communications issues requiring rapid response;
• Develop and manage the communications budget in cooperation with the Finance team and the Deputy Executive Director.

Your qualifications:
• University degree in journalism, marketing, public relations or related field, or equivalent experience
• 7+ years' experience in successively more responsible communication roles, including senior management experience in a communications
role/department; senior role in developing communications strategies; experience in managing staff and project oversight; experience in
communications metrics and measurement; and media relations and crisis communications experience
• Effective storyteller, excellent writer, strong oral communicator in English; second language an asset
• Experienced team leader, able to effectively mentor, motivate and manage internal and freelance/contract team members
• Strategic, innovative thinker who excels at coming up with original ideas, can proactively identify communications opportunities and is able to lead
execution across multiple channels
• Knowledge of human rights and freedom of expression issues
• Strong interpersonal skills and sincere commitment to collegial working style
• A thoughtful listener, sensitive to cultural differences and aware of issues of power dynamics
• Eligible to work in Canada
• Experience in the NGO sector an asset

Starting salary is $70,000 with a comprehensive benefits package.
