Afghan journalist shot by unidentified gunmen

Azizullah Hamdard, a young Afghan reporter for Pajhwok News Agency, suffered an injury to his left arm during an attack by unidentified gunmen in the center of the capital city, Kabul.

Hamdard, who was admitted to the Kabul Emergency hospital, was shot by two gunmen near his residence at around 9:00pm on the night of 3 August 2014.

According to Pajhwok, the attackers fled when residents of nearby houses came to the journalist's aid.

Soon after the incident, the reporter contacted security officials at the 15th police district via telephone but no one came to the site.

Hamdard said he was taken to the Wazir Akbar Khan and Mirwais Raziqi hospitals by his family members at midnight. However, he was not admitted because he was not accompanied by police.

Eventually the reporter was admitted at the Emergency hospital, after hospital management established contact with the police.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but Hamdard linked the incident to his reporting since he had disclosed numerous facts regarding fraud during the presidential elections.

AFJC condemns the attack and calls on the Afghan security forces to seriously investigate the incident and bring the attackers to justice.
