Video: FOPEA, FOE Champion

The Foro de Periodismo Argentino, or FOPEA, is an organisation based in Buenos Aires and founded in 2002 by a group of journalists concerned with a lack of ethical and professional standards within the profession. As Executive Director Andrés D’Alessandro explains in IFEX’s latest “FOE Champion” video, FOPEA is now tackling issues of state influence on the media and access to information and is working to be part of public debates for legislative changes that will benefit freedom of expression in Argentina.

Andrés D'Alessandro: The Argentine Journalism Forum was born after a series of informal meetings between several Argentinean journalists that were concerned about the lack of ethical and professional quality standards in Argentine journalism. One of the biggest issues of the freedom of expression has to do with the State's influence through official advertising by media throughout the country. There is an inadequate political culture regarding respect for public information. Right now we also have problems with access to information. One of the tasks in FOPEA's agenda, through its members considering we have members in all the provinces of Argentina is to actively be part of the public debates concerning these topics and also to promote legislative changes that benefit considerable structural changes within a general framework of freedom of expression. The creation of a group of journalists from across the country aside from certain standards considering the quality of journalism, the freedom of expression professional ethics and journalism training has been one of our biggest achievements. Regarding freedom of expression the integration of this group allows a permanent and active solidarity in any event where freedom of expression may be affected. The type of support that this organisation can give is strengthening individuals' capacities by creating an active solidarity network. To FOPEA, being part of the IFEX community is very important due to the possibility of being in touch with other places' realities not only those of the countries in the area, but globally. That possibility makes you aware of the needs of your country and makes you aware of the reality in which your work develops. To think permanently about these topics to work actively to find solutions to these problems have been some of the most important objectives in order to be part of a journalism organisation that works towards greater freedom of expression.
